"Okay, we'll admit right now that, beyond a few screens and a single movie, we haven't seen Madden NFL 09. However, that doesn't mean we haven't found out a whole bunch about the game in the past two days. EA Sports is in New York City this week to unveil NCAA Football 09 and also announce former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre as the cover athlete for Madden NFL 09, the twentieth anniversary of EA Sports' football series. Though EA isn't quite ready to show the game yet, they were definitely talking about the new features and improvements that should make their way into the game when it's released later this year. Today we met with EA Sports' senior producer Phil Frazier for a "pre-season" discussion of what this highly anticipated game will offer.

We already know that NCAA Football 09 is taking online play seriously with the introduction of online dynasty, but it seems Madden NFL 09 is looking to up its online game as well. Online leagues will be one of the biggest features in the game this year, allowing up to 32 real players to take each other on in a real competitive environment. According to Frazier, this is something that's been wanted by the fans and developers alike for a while now.

"We're real excited about it," Frazier said. "It's one of those features that has been called out in reviews, it's been called out on message boards; we know people have wanted online leagues and we're finally delivering." Up to 32 players will be able to compete in games, participate in the NFL Draft, conduct trades between one another and more in this mode all on a schedule that works for each player in the league. "The nice thing about it is flex scheduling," said Frazier. "You can play your games in any order, at any time. You don't have to play one game a week, you can play five games a week if all five of your opponents are online." The ability to skip games sounds like it will be a crucial tool towards ensuring that your online league--many of which fall apart because of the rigorous scheduling--continues through multiple seasons..."

EA currently has the beta version of their new sub website, eafootballworld.com up and running and football video game fans worldwide are going to enjoy this one.

At present the site is solely linked to the new UEFA Euro 2008 game, giving gamers the ability to really get involved with one another by posting and comparing their own replays from the game, talking trash, and seeing where their nation lies in the leaderboards.

Creating a profile is great fun too, if you are already registered with EA sports, just log in as normal to access the features available. These include:

  • The chance to display your allegiance with your favourite club team/s, national team and player.
  • The chance to in effect “create a player” to be your avatar at the side of your profile, selecting face and features to recreate yourself or perhaps your favourite player.
  • Using credits earned whilst playing EA games to customize the look of your avatar persona….. By completing certain parts of Fifa 08 and Euro 08, credits are linked to your EA account and can then be used on eafootballworld to purchase clothes and equipment for your avatar persona.
  • Activate widgets on your page to show your stats, groups, blogs and videos to other members.

FIFA 08

UEFA 2008 BoxAs some of you will be aware, the demo version of EA’s UEFA Euro 2008 is currently available for free download on the xbox 360 marketplace.

UEFA Euro 2008 for those of you who aren’t in the know is basically the world cup but with only the European teams taking part. Forgive me if I sound patronising but there are plenty of people who have already asked me this question !! It is held every 4 years, alternate to the world cup and it is a huge deal in Europe and indeed across the globe.

Normally, at the hint of a football/soccer related demo, my ears would perk up like a rabid hound but I have to say I am not a great fan of these single tournament games as I feel they are purely a money grabber. Having said that, I am aware that some of you are genuinely interested in these games as you may not follow a “club” team and it is only the international teams you are after, in which case you my want to check this one out…

The demo version is a full 90 minutes of a qualifying round matchup between France and Germany played as either the full team or in EA’s great addition from Fifa 08, the “be a pro mode”.
