Hey guys, Yuri B. here again for yet another year of awesome video game football on the PS2 and Xbox.  For those of you who don't know me, I'm one of the designers working on this year's version of the game we all love, Madden Football.

Wow, so it's hard to believe that it's been 20 years since we made the first Madden Football.  It's equally hard to believe how much the game has evolved during that time and how much the PS2 and Xbox have participated in that evolution.  Having said that, you've probably seen some of the recent hype and praise for our Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii brethren and it's all rightfully deserved.  Officially the torch has been passed to the new generation of consoles, but for those of you still hanging on to your PS2's and Xbox's, don't' worry, we haven't forgotten you!

No doubt most of you are probably asking, "So what the heck can these legacy gen versions possibly offer me?"  Shockingly enough, these old girls still have a lot of life left in them, so let me just put those fears to rest...with Madden Football 09 I'm confident we're going to blow your expectations out of the water!  Not only have we added a whole slew of new features to all of our existing modes, not only have we added some graphical enhancements, but we've also made improvements to the gameplay which I guarantee will change the way you play the game.  We'll cover the new gameplay improvements in a future blog, so keep an eye out for it, but if you're interested in finding out what we've done with everything else, keep reading...

Madden NFL 09 Authentic Offensive Team Playbooks

Check it out HERE at EA Sports Madden 09 site.  Includes videos of real NFL plays in games, and those new plays in Madden 09.

"Hello Madden NFL 09 fans and thanks for taking the time to check out my blog post, my name is Anthony White and I'm a game designer here at EA Tiburon.  I've been a passionate Madden gamer since 1991 back when the game was on the Sega Genesis console and in my opinion I have one of the best and coolest jobs here at EA.  My primary responsibility is researching, designing, implementing, and testing the offensive, defensive, and special teams plays which are used in each of our football titles at EA.  For those who don't know I recently wrote a blog post on the changes we made for the playbooks in NCAA Football 09.  That blog can be found here.  This time around I'm going to discuss the changes, updates, and additions to the team playbooks in Madden NFL 09.

The team playbooks in Madden NFL 09 have undergone a major overhaul.  As many of you are aware, each week during the NFL season we receive the actual coach's film of every game that was played in the NFL the previous week.  I personally watched and broke down game film on every team in the NFL and we'll show you a few video clips of plays that were created as a direct result of film study.  With the large number of hours devoted to studying film the end result was the addition of 31 new formations and over 1,200 new plays to this year's Madden NFL game.

In this year's edition of Madden NFL you'll notice new schemes, new terminology, and a more streamlined organization of the plays within each playbook.   All 32 team playbooks are now much more unique and authentic to their real life counterpart's style of play.  Whether it's the Patriots heavy use of the shotgun spread offense, the Seahawks west coast system, or the Bears power run game, you'll see that reflected in that team's playbook.  It also comes to light when playing against any of the CPU controlled teams in a Franchise or Play Now game.  We made a concerted effort to tune each team's playcall logic so that it closely mimics its real life counterpart's style of play.  That means when you play a team like the Patriots they'll use lots of shotgun, the Steelers and their use of bunch/condensed formations or Packers with their Full House backfield package will be evident..."

Getting Ready for the EA Football Community Event

Tomorrow I board the big 'ol plane for Orlando and EA Tiburon studios.  I have some big plans for some of the coverage while I'm there. More on that later.

We just got word that "stuff we can't talk/write about just yet" will be at a bare minimum.  You probably won't even notice it, and from what little has been revealed that we "cant mention" is some stuff that I know our loyal readers probably wouldn't even inquire about.

I purchased a voice recorder for developer interviews, I'll have my digital camera with me, and I'll also be blogging in my free time.

...but, regarding that "free time"

One thing is for sure, our schedules are pretty jam-packed while there.  My initial coverage may post quite late in the day on Thursday and Friday, and I'm sure certain things such as pictures and me dictating the dev interviews from microcassette- will probably hit this weekend once I arrive back in Pittsburgh.

How jam-packed are those schedules for the Community Leader reps?  Well... give it a look:

Thursday

11:00 a.m.      NCAA
11:30 a.m.      NCAA
12:00 p.m.      NCAA

1:00 p.m.       NCAA

3:30 p.m.       Head Coach
4:00 p.m.       Head Coach
4:30 p.m.       Head Coach
5:00 p.m.       Head Coach
5:30 p.m.       Head Coach
6:00-10:00p.m.  NCAA/Head Coach

Friday

Time    Title
10:00 a.m.      Fantasy Presentation
11:00 a.m.      Madden
11:30 a.m.      Madden
12:00 p.m.      Madden
12:30 p.m.      Madden

3:00 p.m.       Madden
3:30 p.m.       Madden
4:00 p.m.       Madden
4:30 p.m.       Madden
5:00 p.m.       Madden
5:30 p.m.       Madden
6:00-midnight   NCAA/Head Coach/ Madden

This will be some SERIOUS hands-on time with the three products...with a tournament or two thrown in as well, and we'll have access to the devs, the studio- you name it.   This is unprecedented access beign allowed from EA, and its never been this "early" in the development cycle.  They want impressions, they want feedback, and they now have a few months left in the cycle to address anything we might find, or comments we might have that may improve the game.

Should be a great trip.  More news to come.

Madden NFL 09 Hands-on (IGN)

The most additions we've seen to the franchise in years. Exclusive gameplay clip and screens included.

"It's been said that people should learn to appreciate the little things in life. The same is also true for Madden football. Madden 09 does not redefine videogame football. It doesn't take the classic Madden formula and turn it upside down. What it does do is it takes so many of the little things from last year's game and improves on them exponentially. They aren't details that can be seen by watching a short gameplay clip or looking at screenshots. They're the things that you don't realize about the game until you pick it up and play it for yourself, something that I was lucky enough to do recently at EA Sports' Tiburon studio. I played several games with a bunch of different teams on a handful of fields and can say with confidence that Madden 09 improves on last year's impressive effort.

The first thing you'll see when you boot up Madden 09 is the man himself, John Madden. He's been removed more and more from the Madden football presentation and gameplay over the past few years, but now he's back delivering introductions to the new Virtual Trainer feature that players can use to acclimate themselves to the flow of this year's gameplay. There are four challenges that you have the option of completing that will set the mark for your Madden IQ and thus your custom difficulty level (click here to read more about Madden IQ and the Virtual Trainer). There's rushing defense, rushing offense, passing defense and passing offense..."
