EA released a new Producers Blog with Ian Cummings explaining the new sideline catches as well as a video to accompany the blog. Here's a link to the vid... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMpnahHNnjA " Hello again faithful blog readers…welcome back for another installment of game play goodness by your old pal Ian Cummings. I was really happy to see the feedback from my last post regarding gang tackles, so here's another follow up for a highly requested video...sideline catches. This should give you an idea of what to expect in this area for Madden NFL 08. Disclaimer again - this isn't slick editing or marketing approved really - just me and an extra 5 minutes of my day. There's not all that much to explain either - I think it speaks for itself, but some key points: 1. You can see how we actually take awareness into account on these videos - a highly rated player like Gates is consistently getting his feet in, but then you can see a player like Vincent Jackson who's rated lower than Gates still can play the catch but possibly not get his feet in. It's a small detail but it really helps separate out some of the elite players, which has been an overarching goal for Madden across the board this year. I really love this aspect too because in previous years, often times we would just not allow a player to play certain catches, where realistically I think probably any NFL receiver or TE (or RB for that matter) can play that catch, but not everyone is as "aware" to get both feet in. I'm curious to hear what you think on that point though…We still do limit animations based on the new spectacular catch rating for this year, but should we do that more or based on awareness too? Do you agree with me in that you'd rather see them attempt the animation and possibly play it out of bounds, or would you rather them just play a normal animation that doesn't even look like they are getting their feet in (a la last year)?

Another Ian Cummings blog post and he brings some good insight on Madden, yet again. Here, he talks about Gang Tackling in the Madden game as well as posting a nice vide of some gang tackling action. READ BLOG HERE WATCH GANG TACKLING VID HERE "After the last blog post describing some of the shots from the marketing video, I went ahead and took some time out this week to try capture some of the new gang tackling stuff directly from my XBOX 360 here at my desk. I saw a few posts calling me out - things like "where is this video you promised us?!?!?"…sorry guys, I am a busy man. I'm sure you understand…would you rather me fix some of the last second issues and add more last second features and polish, or put together a video? It's a delicate balance…I stayed pretty late last night so while I waited on builds to finish I tried to throw together what I could.
Keep in mind this is pretty rough - there's no slick MTV-style editing with heart thumping music - just pure gameplay and replays. I'm by no means a camera expert either, so hopefully you don't get too seasick watching the videos. I tried to get the best examples I could within the 10 minute time window I had…so there is still some ugliness in here that we're working on (you'll see some foot sliding and dumb end-play assignment stuff), but I hope you'll be happy with what you see. Videos can't show the game changing difference this technology has made for us (and for you all). I tried to get a really good 4 man one, but only got ones where the defender fell backwards at first. This isn't always the case, but it was the best I could do with the time…getting a "true" 4 man pileup proved kind of difficult.
After you watch it - post and give me some feedback. Just as an FYI, a few of the tackles in this video are physics-driven, i.e. not mo-capped (because that really limits you when you're tied so directly to real-life capture). Personally, I can immediately tell when I see one that isn't "real", but that's what makes it really cool to me too. What are your thoughts on it? If you were hired as the lead gameplay designer for EA Sports starting tomorrow, and had to make the call, would you...
A.) Have gang tackles trigger less often, but guarantee that they look "captured" and realistic, including getup animations
B.) Rely solely on physics based animations, which ensures much more playback and animation coverage, but more physics/ragdoll-ish looking animations
C.) Do a mix of both (which is what we do now) Choose your own adventure!
I'm curious to hear your feedback, and enjoy the vid.
Look for videos of sideline catches and double team over the next two Fridays…I have to finish up some tuning stuff before I focus on capturing some of those.
-Ian "

Madden Prodcuer Ian Cummings has posted a new blog today called "06.01.07 Madden 08 Gameplay Trailer: The Devil is in the Details". In it he breaks down the new Madden sizzle video and points some of the new goods of Madden '08. Not only does he break down some of the new aspects of the game, he also has a little bit of a bone to pick with the Marketing department. Heh. Check out the entire blog HERE. (If you don't see the blog I speak off, make sure to click on the "June" link on the left hand side of the EA page under the "Archives" header.) " Shot 1: Vince Young Pointing (in Shotgun) Though this is a simple shot, it actually is really cool in that this is not a scriptable or cut scene in any way. This is all real-time gameplay animations driving him getting set, whereas you remember for 06 and 07 we actually used cut-scenes to move players to their positions pre-snap. I really couldn’t stand those…so this is one of the little things that makes me happy."

IGN has posted a new Madden 08 "hands-on", and it sounds chock full o' goodness. Check it out HERE. (and it also includes a new in-game video.... animation looks top-notch). Also, IGN's Jon Robinson has also posted his own "Five Things You Need To Know" about Madden 08- and its pretty deep as well- checking in at 3 pages long. Check J-Rob's article out HERE. at IGN.
It sure is sounding like we are going to get some top-notch football this year- from both EA and 2K.
