Earlier in the week I was asked to write a user review for the NHL 09 website based on what I saw at the Community Event. I just noticed this morning that it was online, so check it out... "The release of EA Sports NHL 09 is still a few months away, but it cannot come fast enough. EA SPORTS has really been pushing the envelope with their NHL series since it made the jump up to the XBOX 360 and eventually the PS3. NHL 07 debuted the "Skill Stick" which might've changed hockey games forever and NHL 08 added on with the AHL, 60 fps, and a "light" version of online leagues. So what could they possibly add to NHL 09 to take the series even further down the road of innovation?
For starters there have been new moves added to the game. Now you can perform stick lifts on defense, show off the skills of a guy like Sidney Crosby and perform one-handed dekes on offense, perform 360 degree poke checks if need be, and there's even a new checking system in place that can provide hundreds of different checking animations. You can also make people pay for hanging out in front of your goalie by giving them a few friendly "reminders" that they aren't allowed to be there with some quick nudges of the R-Stick." The day is finally here….well one of them anyway. Today is the day that I can actually talk about what I saw and played at the EA Sports NHL 09 Community Event back in April. Those of us that attended weren’t allowed to talk about anything we say until now and I figured that people didn’t want to hear about random stuff about going to dinner and things like that. Today is different and lets get down to business…..
Let’s get some key things out of the way first. Those of us that attended the event were the first ones outside of the EA Canada studio to actually see and play the game. It was rather exciting; as I have never seen a game so early in it’s development cycle and actually get to play it. It was so early that there were still some NHL 08 menus up and sample text for other menu options. It was rather neat just to see the game in that state, but make no mistake, the game was highly playable and ran very smooth. The good thing is that the game feels exactly like NHL 08 with some key improvements in many areas. So the gamers will be able to pick the stick right up and feel very comfortable with the game.
Another thing that I wanted to mention, or have mentioned already over the last couple weeks, is that the dev team hears our complaints about the game. While we were at EA Canada we sat through a couple PowerPoint presentations outline some things that they were about to show us about the game. David Littman went right through a list of some of our biggest complaints and not only listed them, but also showed us stats on just how many forums those complaints were posted on and how many posts were made about them. They also read through a ton of reviews and outlined the positives and both negatives of the game that the community has been posting about. It was very impressive. They are well aware of the fact that the CPU shoots too many one-timers and are trying to tone it down and they are also well aware of the passive defense that plagued NHL 08, but we’ll get to that stuff later.

ConsoleSports.net will be attending the EA Sports NHL 09 Community Event this week at EA's Canada studio in Vancouver, BC along with other sites from the hockey video game community. This is a very exciting time for the hockey community in general as it is the earliest the community will be able to get a first glimpse at a game in development ever...I think. So, keep checking back to ConsoleSports.net throughout the week for updates. I will be posting whatever I can, but keep in mind that due to the stage of development, we will be under some very strict embargo's. Which means our lips will be sealed. Also don't forget to keep on checking back to the ConsoleSports.net forums where I will try to post in there as much as possible during the trip as well. -Craig Gonzalez (co-founder) | |

IGN voted NHL 08 Sports Videogame of the year in their Best of 2007 edition. "It's a shame that there's been such a sharp downturn in hockey's popularity, because more people should know that this game is the best hockey game EA's put out since the vaunted NHL '94. With a greatly-improved dynasty mode and a game that actually feels like real hockey, there wasn't a sports game that was even in the same league as NHL '08 this year."
