ImageAlmost two years ago, it was revealed that Electronic Arts had formed a separate team to develop a new NHL game, from scratch, for the next generation consoles.

Introducing the incredibly innovative "skill stick", NHL07 blew away gaming publications and fans alike with more responsive controls, incredible graphics and the most realistic goalies any hockey game had ever seen. However, like any new sports game built from the ground up, NHL07 had it's flaws. From suspect AI to a choppy 30FPS frame rate, the EA team from Vancouver, BC knew it had it's work cut out for it.  In the second year of the teams 3-year-cycle, NHL08 has cleaned up all of those issues while giving the user even more control.

Not only is the game running at a buttery smooth 60FPS, but the new controls allow the user a wider arc for dangling the puck, a nifty new slap-pass-deflection feature and the ability to free yourself of the puck. Using the left-bumper the user can put the puck between defenders skates and sticks or you can chip the puck around them to retrieve on the other side.  I can tell you that this new 'free puck' technique is extremely cool but very hard to pull off. A great majority of the time the puck will deflect off a defenders stick or skates or the defenders will simply put you on your butt as you try to dance around him. Attributes also play a large role in how successful the user is in pulling off some sick moves. Don't expect to see enforcer Andrew Peters drag the puck between Nick Lidstrom's skates to get some alone time with the goalie.

NHL 08 Producer David Littman appears on The Sports Game Guy's Sports Anomaly podcast on 1up.com. It contains pretty much a lot of the information that's already been released on, but it also contains some info about the demo (No, they didn't say when it's coming out) which will be full 5-on-5 and they do bring up the fact that 2K has eseentially ripped off the skill stick.  They even go into discussing some player ratings and how they will be adjusting player attributes when they release roster updates as well.  It's a very good podcast and one worth checking out to get your NHL 08 fix.

ImageThe time has finally come where we can actually talk about NHL 08 in full.  Previously, we weren’t really able to talk about the online modes, Dynasty Mode, and the Creation Zone. I know the info has been coming out of the media sites about some online features and the creation zone, but we were actually able to get our hands on the game and experience some of these things first hand.

Online Leagues

I’m going to cut right to it.  As it’s been released already, there are going to be actual online leagues in NHL 08 this season.  That’s right; EA listened and are giving us what we’ve wanted them to give us for a few years now.  Here’s the thing, though, from what I understand there might not be a web interface for it and the league pages might only be accessible via XBOX Live in NHL 08.  That was mentioned to me at the Easton NHL 08 Community Event shortly after they announced the online leagues, but there still seemed to be a little uncertainty about that.  I’m playing it safe and pretty much planning on their not being a web component to the league and hope we get pleasantly surprised.   We aren’t going to be able to do full online franchises with trades and what not this year, but the mere fact that we are able to compete in a leagues and have it keep records and stats is a huge plus coming from the EA camp.
