Being totally new to the Top Spin series, I really didn't know what to expect when firing up the XBOX 360 version of Top Spin 3.  After about an hour of play, I have really begun to appreciate the intricacies of this well-made game.  I have to admit that I have no tennis experience whatsoever.  I have watched it on TV in the past, but never played it myself, or played a video game based on it.

(Confession: The "main draw" to me watching tennis in my youth was to stare at tennis Hall of Famer Gabriella Sabatini..the raven-haired Argentinean smokin' hottie who retired in 1996..but I digress...)

Anyway- so let it be said that I'm an extremely casual tennis observer.

The good news is that 2K Sports has a very in-depth training mode that teaches you the fineries of playing the Top Spin 3.  Believe me, that's a good thing, because it also teaches positioning and recovery after a shot, which has trained me not to be the "charge the net" fool I was in my first attempts at exhibition games.  The training mode teaches you how to handle shots (both forehand and backhand), positioning, serves.. you name it.

(Serves are my weakness right now.  I'm very shaky with my placement.  Need more practice.  I also need to work more on post-shot positioning recovery.)

2008 NHL Stanley Cup Preview

Lauren BelfoyLauren Belfoy is a guest contributor who can be seen on NHL Connect . She provides fantastic in-depth analysis in her blog of not only the NHL, but also minor league hockey as well.

Conspiracy theories abound! A lot of theories about the playoffs being fixed have been flying around like saucer passes in warm-ups the past couple weeks. Everyone seems to have a tall tale on the issue: The NHL wants to see the Penguins win a Cup and bring back a winning tradition to this brand new team of superstars. That photo of Sid the Kid hoisting the Cup in victory would be priceless. Think of what it will do for the league! And what about those Detroit Red Wings? Those questionable penalties and should-have-beens during the Dallas series were intentional calls by the officials to try and squeeze a real series out of the two teams. After all no one likes a sweep, right? Won’t we generate more revenue from a game 7 than a game 4? That’s how the league… I mean the Cup… changes everything.

You can choose to believe the hype.

Or you can chalk it up to a few fans with vivid imaginations. Did it occur to any of these skeptics that maybe the Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings are just plain good? That both teams deserve their hard earned spot in the Stanley Cup finals? Now there’s a theory for you.

Local news reports from Vancouver today, revealed more information from yesterdays Fight Night Round 4 development launch party at EA Canada’s Burnaby HQ.......

The media were invited along to witness Lennox “The Lion” Lewis, Sugar Ray Leonard and Ronald “Winky” Wright enter the ring in EA’s motion capture studio. Reports state that although not there in person, EA quote “promised” Mike Tyson would be a part of the game.

The news report goes on to briefly explain the dynamics of motion capture and how it is being used to re-create sports person’s movements in next generation video games.

Sugar Ray was reportedly in top form, even at 52 years of age, throwing punches for the baying media and describing FNR4 as  “out of this world” and  saying “I think it’s better than the real thing” !!!

EA are promising that FNR4 will offer the most realistic in ring boxing experience to date, with the new physics engine allowing for missed punches, glancing punches, knockout punches and finally rough and tumble inside fighting...... No doubt, the latter would be a great addition in terms of realism.

Fatigue, adrenalin, footwork and timing are all coming into play too..............

Fight Night Round 3 was great, visually it was outstanding but the single player experience was pretty horrendous and something I hope isn’t again forgotten in round 4............more to follow on that as information is released...........

EA Sports announced Fight Night Round 4 on their site today.  Here's the press release....

"REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - May 7, 2008 - Electronic Arts Inc. (Nasdaq: ERTS) announced today that EA SPORTS Fight Night Round 4 is in development at EA Canada in Vancouver under the EA SPORTS brand. EA SPORTS Fight Night is back with the most realistic "in the ring" experience to date, featuring some of the greatest boxers in history fighting in their prime.

"The EA SPORTS Fight Night franchise has always been synonymous with quality and innovation that raised the bar for the sports videogame genre", said Kevin Wilkinson, Executive Producer, EA SPORTS. "EA SPORTS Fight Night Round 3 was a platform defining game as the industry transitioned to next generation consoles. EA SPORTS Fight Night Round 4 will change how boxing games are played and measured in the future."

Featuring a re-written gameplay engine, EA SPORTS Fight Night Round 4 will add a variety of fighting styles and boxer differentiation to authentically emulate the greatest fighters of all time. Pressure your opponent with the brawling inside style of young Mike Tyson, bobbing and weaving to set up powerful hooks and uppercuts. Capitalize on Muhammad Ali's reach, hand speed and fleetness of foot to bewilder your opponent with lightning fast jabs and straights from the outside. For the first time in history, EA SPORTS Fight Night Round 4 gives you the opportunity to pit these legendary heavyweights against one another and name a true champ.

No fight will be the same with an all-new physics-based animation system that recreates the full spectrum of true-to-life punch impacts, giving boxers a devastating arsenal of punches, blocks and ring movement. The new physics system allows for missed punches, glancing punches, knockout blows and for the first time ever, rough and tumble inside fighting. Fatigue, adrenaline, footwork and timing all come into play as you hammer away at your opponents.

EA SPORTS Fight Night Round 4 will be available for the Xbox 360 system and the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and ships to retailers in 2009. The game has not yet been rated by the ESRB or PEGI.

EA SPORTS is the leading interactive sports software brand in the world, with top-selling titles and franchises including Madden NFL Football, FIFA Soccer, NHL hockey, NBA LIVE basketball, NCAA Football, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR and NASCAR racing.
