Today I received an e-mail from Will Kinsler (aka RAC) from EA Sports outlining the updates to the Community Leaders program that EA has.  Now, it's not just the owners of fansites that are eligible to be in the program, anybody can be.  Here's the letter that Will wanted to send out to the community.

What is the Football Community Leaders Program?

The Football Community Leaders Program is an initiative that was created in order to better connect EA SPORTS with fans of our titles, while rewarding stand out members of the football gaming community for their contributions and accomplishments.

What do community leaders do?

Community leaders interact with EA SPORTS to help create a better experience for their fellow football gaming fans.  Leaders have an opportunity to directly communicate feedback about games and help to create unique content that highlights what is happening around the football gaming community.  A select number of “elite community leaders” who have put forth an extraordinary effort to help their fellow fans may have the opportunity to participate in two additional ways:

•    Elite community leaders might occasionally receive an early copy of an EA SPORTS title, in order that they may use it to help answer questions from other community members.
•    Elite community members might also be invited to EA SPORTS community days throughout the year.  Community days allow community leaders an early look at EA SPORTS titles, and a chance to speak directly with developers on location at the studios where the games are developed.

Bloomberg.com: Sony Profits may fall 50%

"Jan. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp., the world's largest maker of video-game players, may report third-quarter profit fell 50 percent after its flagship PlayStation 3 lost market share to Nintendo Co.'s Wii.

Losses from games probably drove net income down to 84.1 billion yen ($691 million) in the three months ended Dec. 31, from a record 168.9 billion yen a year earlier, according to the median estimate of five analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Sales at Tokyo-based Sony, which reports earnings tomorrow, probably rose 9.6 percent to 3 trillion yen.

The results may highlight Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer's failure to fend off Nintendo, whose $250 Wii console outsells the PlayStation 3 by two-to-one. Sony may still exceed its full-year profit target because of a weaker yen, sales of Bravia televisions and growth at its movie unit."

Another NFL football season has almost come and gone.  We're deep into the playoffs now, and not too far away from the NFL Draft.  Its at about this time when I usually sit down and compose my own personal wishlist for the next installment of Madden on the game systems.

EA Manuals. Where's the Beef?

Monday, 01 January 2007
I just picked up yet another EA game today, FIFA 07, and I stopped off at a restaurant by my house to get a bite to eat afterwards.  I figured that I would open up the FIFA game and pull the manual out to read while I ate a bit of lunch.  So, I did, and to my not so surprise, FIFA comes with an instruction manual that is a whopping 9 pages!  Needless to say, it didn't take me very long to thumb through it. So, after thinking about how thick the manual is for NBA 2K7, I decided to pull out the manuals of all the EA Sports '07 series games that I own. NCAA 07, Madden 07, NHL 07, and now FIFA 07.... all 360 games.   After further inspection, it seems that ALL of these games instruction manuals are a whole 9 pages.  9! Meanwhile, the manual for NBA 2K7 is 49 pages counting all the credits and all that jazz.

I'm starting to get really irritated by the fact that EA doesn't find it very important for us to know how to operate the game.  Yeah, they have tutorials in the game and everything, but that doesn't do me any good when I want something to read in the "library" or if I wanted a printed manual in front of me while I play the game.  Besides that, we are in the next gen in our video game systems and now EA is starting to add some new, more extensive, controls to their games, but it seems they just don't want to tell us what they are.

Case in point, I find if preposterous that NHL 07 has a 9 page manual.  It has an innovative shot system and the game has been completely revamped.  I know for a fact that there's all kinds of different shots that you can pull of with the R Stick, but it's not written in the manual.  I find it very odd that they choose not to let us know about those.  I'm an adult and don't have time to figure out the hidden moves like I'm playing Mortal Kombat.  That's not what sports games are about!

Also, in the FIFA manual, I found this little gem,

"Most of the game modes in FIFA Soccer 07 are self-explanatory and are not covered in this manual".

Really?

I know soccer is big worldwide and all, but I hardly follow the sport and how is a novice like myself supposed to know the intricacies of the Manager Mode?  FIFA Lounge?  What is that? This is the first soccer game that I've owned in years, there isn't a damn thing that is "self-explanatory" to me.  Not to mention, there's all kinds of moves to pull off when you're the ballhandler.  They have some moves listed, but how about a nice comprehensive listing showing us what they are? Is that too much to ask?

2K Sports doesn't seem to have a problem listing the different moves you can pull of in NBA 2K7 with *gasp* explanations of exactly how to do it.  Not only that, but they seem to take it a step further and explain to us when would be a good time to pull of such special moves.  It seems that they break down every aspect of the game and doesn't leave a stone unturned.

It's getting really frustrating.  It's bad enough that we have to pay for alternate uni's that never come out, extra stadiums that slowly come out, and deal with several disconnects when playing Madden, but it's another when we aren't getting the information that we need in the manual, while paying $60 for the game itself.  I thought with all the new hardware and extra stuff they could put into the game meant that we would be a bit more fulfilled with the gaming experience.  As of right now, I am not feeling fulfilled. I am more or less starting to be slighted when it comes to some of the simple things that we're used to.

Quietcool72's New Year's Sports Gaming Wishlist

Sunday, 31 December 2006

It's the last day of 2006, and I figured I'd put together a wish-list for sports video gaming in 2007.  Of course, this list is 100% opinion, but...that said...  here it is.

Quietcool72's ConsoleSports Wishlist for 2007.

1. EA needs to seriously impress the multitudes that it dissappointed with Madden NFL 07.  First of all, they can start with having all the current gen features on next gen... such as smart routes, hot blitzes, hot zones, hot man-to-man adjustments... you know...all the stuff that was missing from Madden Next Gen 07.  Of course, giving us back that stuff.. and stopping there..would also be a letdown.  Madden needs to innovate.  It needs more realism.  It needs broadcast quality presentation.  It needs commentary.  It needs halftime highlights from the game you are playing and from games around the league.  It needs personality.  Lastly, EA needs to come off of its long-time overuse of lengthy animation chains and make Madden more of a fluid, user-controlled game.  I'm sick of my DB's going into some lengthy interception attempt animation (That I can't control) as the AI WR catches the ball and blows by them.  "Getting caught in an animation chain" is the most lame way to give up big plays and give up points, first downs, you name it.  In short, EA needs to "wow" us.  Its been a long time since the Madden product delivered on that.

2. 2K Sports needs to realize that the minors are an important part of MLB baseball.  EA had them when MVP was allowed to be made (at least the pro version), and MLB The Show got it right too.  However, 2K seems too fixated on dazzle such as the reflections on Derek Jeter's helmet and the way polyester uniforms look in the sun.  MLB 2K7 needs to be a much "meatier" product than the arcade drivel they have been tossing our way each spring.  I realize the EA MVP employee they have should help..but how many years does it take to get the minors in the game.  Call people up, send them down...and be able to play the games.   Yeah, I know..with all the problems 2K baseball has had, I should happy if the game is just playable this year.  But you know what? Screw that.  No free passes for EA, 2K, or anybody.  Hell, their EXCLUSIVE games should both play MUCH better than what they did in 2006.

3. I keep hoping that this will be the year that the two 2K basketball games finally give the players some "defensive width".  As it stands, online/head to head, one fale step by the defender and the mere press of a "dunk/drive" button equals 2 points damn near each time. 2K basketball veterans often will tell you that successful defense against a human player is more a matter of trying hard not to control the defender on the ball, because the AI controlled defenders aren't held to the same momentum rules against a driving dribbler that human controlled defenders are.  Straight up 2K, it shouldn't suck to play defense against a human controlled dribbler.  That's kind of a big thing.  When entire leagues have a "limit the dunks/drives" rule, I think it's easy to see that there's a big problem.  Fix it.

4.  Here's hoping that 2K makes the games that are "hinted" at by Anthony Chau and others.  So far, it seems like there could be an unlicensed football game, a boxing game, and a golf game that may surprise us out of 2K in 2007.  That's a good thing.  More is always better, especially if done right.

5. I'm hoping that MLB 07 The Show is all that this year.  They made the best sports game of 2006 in my opinion, and lets hope they keep it up.  Hopefully it will be good on PS1, and Sony DEFINITELY needs SOMETHING on PS3 other than XBOX 360 ports if they want to pull their sales numbers out of the toilet.

6. In the strangest twist of 06, we saw EA dazzle with their NHL product, while 2K did that "Very EA" move that equated to what seemed like a mere roster update.  So, lets hope that 2K's NHL team can catch up with the surprise greatness of NHL 07.  (And let's hope EA Canada delivers even better goods in 2007 than they gave us in 2006 too, and continue to build on the solid NHL 07 foundation.)

7. I hope that in 2007, someone at EA wakes the hell up about online leagues... but I guess that would require EA to have something resembling STABLE in-house XBOX Live servers that actually let gamers COMPLETE an online game.... but here's hoping they can find the time and energy to get BOTH issues addressed.

8. I hope that NBA Live 08 on Next Gen isn't the disk-shaped turd that NBA Live 06 and 07 were.  {quotes}It's become a bad joke just how bad EA's basketball games have become.{/quotes} March Madness 07 might go a long way in ending some of those jokes, but knowing EA....

9. In 2007, I hope that Nintendo finds a way to flesh-out some of the very cool concepts in sports games that were demonstrated in "Wii Sports".  A fleshed-out Wii golf sim would be incredible.  I'm already wishing there were more courses on "Wii Sports" golf.  And a career mode in a Wii Sports boxing game would be kick-ass to the extreme... heck, get the Stallone license, or some classic fighters and you'd have yourself a sweet boxing sim.  (A "Rocky" or "Boxing Legends" game could do very well- few people can name any current heavyweights anyway.  The sport is a no-name wreck right now anyway.)  And...online is important, Nintendo.  Lets see it.

10. I hope we see start to see sports games with online spectator mode in 2007.

There you have it.

Have a happy New Year.
