"There are many good reasons to watch college basketball: The pageantry of the game and its fans, the "anything can happen" nature of the annual NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, and, of course, the legacy of pride and history that long-successful teams have built over the course of many decades. With the upcoming release of 2K Sports' College Hoops 2K7, you'll get a chance to create some history of your own by guiding your own coaching career (and the teams you head) to virtual greatness in the game's legacy mode, which has undergone some tweaks this season.

As in previous College Hoops games, legacy mode is split into two variations--open, which lets you take control of any team featured in the game, and the more challenging career version, which has you take the reins of schools with--how do we put this politely?--less-than-sterling basketball reputations, in the hopes of raising the fortunes of that team, and perhaps even moving on to bigger and better jobs as your career progresses. One of the biggest changes this year is that, unlike in College Hoops games of the past, you can be fired when playing in open mode. The coaches' carousel swings in both open and career versions of legacy mode during the off-season, so if you can't keep up the winning ways of an established school like Kentucky or UConn, you can expect to be on the hot seat before too long.

Another important change to the mode is the influence of team unity to your team's fortunes. We wrote about how unity works in our previous look at College Hoops 2K7, and it's nice to see the concept carry over into the most significant single-player portion of the game. Team unity won't just affect your team's on-the-court performance--where unified teams of mediocre players can even take down an undisciplined team of better athletes--it also will have an affect on how your team is perceived in the game. An experienced team with a high unity rating will benefit in the preseason polls and, once the NCAA tournament (or the NIT, which is a new addition to the game this year) rolls around, high-unity teams might find themselves in a better seeding. Bottom line: You can hardly go wrong by keeping your team playing...well, like a team."

"How do you explain George Mason University's unlikely Cinderella story during the 2006 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament? Was it raw talent that got them to the Final Four, toppling traditional powerhouses like Michigan State, North Carolina, and Connecticut? Was it pure luck? If you ask the folks at 2K Sports that same question, they might have a different answer for you: unity. The concept of team unity plays a big role in the gameplay of the publisher's upcoming college basketball game, College Hoops 2K7, and we got a hands-on look at how the concept is being worked into the game.

Unity is a measure of how well a team is playing together on the floor. It's dependent on a number of factors--how experienced your players are, how often you make substitutions, and, of course, how well you perform. Teams with high unity are better at nearly every aspect of the game, from the little things like setting up the screen and making smart passes to larger components of the on-floor action such as defensive ability and shot making. Conversely, teams with low unity will often be less apt at these team-related fundamentals, regardless of how talented a team they are. In fact, how unity is applied in the game means that a high-talent, mediocre-unity team such as UConn might struggle against a team comprising less talented but better-unified players (think George Mason and the Huskies). Unity isn't going to necessarily guarantee a win, but it might just keep you in a game or two.

It looks like 2K Sports has updated their site with the new features for College Hoops 2K7. Better late than never, I guess.  Anyway, check it out:

XBox 360:

  • Shot Stick Varsity - Last year's innovative Shot Stick control gets an upgrade with greater precision control and even more ways to take the ball to the hoop.

  • Team Unity - Chemistry matters! How long has your team been playing together? How many upper-classmen are on the floor? Too many ball hogs and not enough team players in the game? All of these factors will now have a direct impact on how your team performs together on the floor - a low chemistry rating will result in sloppy play, and conversely, the more your players play together, the tighter their play becomes.

  • Chant Creator - Create your own, customized chants for your home crowd to use during the game when you specify - during free throws, when the opposing team has the ball, when your team makes a basket as well as during many other key events in the game.

  • Half-Time Adjustments - At each half-time break learn which areas of your game are going well and what needs improvement in the 2nd half.

  • "Eyes of the Coach" Gameplay Mode - For the first time ever, play the game in first-person perspective through the eyes of the coach. Walk the sidelines, make substitutions, and call plays. But be careful, mkake the right decisions to put your team in the best position to win or else team morale can plummet and victory will slip away.

  • Post-Season NIT - Finding your team on the wrong side of the bubble come March? For the first time ever, the NIT comes to College Hoops, allowing your team to get that valuable post-season experience upon which to build a future national champion.

  • More Customization - Make your own schools with customized uniforms and uniquely designed arenas. With an even more robust player creation system, you can bring your own NCAA team to life like never before.

  • Improved Legacy Mode - Legacy mode gets a complete upgrade in College Hoops 2K7, with improvements in everything from a new simulation engine and recruiting tools to bracketology, NCAA record books and new broadcast shows like College Hoops Tonight.

XBox & Playstation®2:

College Hoops 2K7. Does it exist?

Saturday, 21 October 2006
An interesting thing happened to me the other night.  I walked into my local Gamestop to pick up NBA 2K7, which is sweet by the way, and I was asked if I wanted to put a deposit on any of their upcoming released.  Well, I am more of a fan of 2K’s College Hoops series as I like the versatility of it, so I told them that I wanted to put a few bucks on that game.  There was a problem, though.  They couldn’t seem to find the release date in their system, but they did see the release date of EA’s March Madness, but I happily declined to put money on that game as I think it is garbage.  Confused by what I was just told at Gamestop, I went to 2K’s site when I got home to check to see if they had any release date up on their site on College Hoops, but unsurprisingly, they did not.  Heck, they didn’t even have any updated screen shots or anything up there.

Which leads me to my point….

2K constantly dumps on their College Hoops series!

I really think 2K is really missing the boat when it comes to the promotion of their games, especially College Hoops.  With March Madness being such a waste of disk space over the last couple of seasons, 2K could easily be kings of the entire basketball genre, and they could OWN the college basketball market hands down.  But instead they keep on treating College Hoops like it’s a pain in the ass to make.  Every year it comes out with little to no promotions whatsoever.  If you go to 2K’s forums, they don’t say a word about the game in there, I’m actually surprised they made a forum for it.  You go to the official College Hoops website and they have a whole 5 screen shots, with 3 of them from April and the other two from August 4th, and they have a whole 2 vides up there, one with JJ Redick.  Their latest news update was from the end of August, as well.

WTF?!

Now, a point could be made that EA doesn’t promote their March Madness game as their website is not up. That’s a good point, but MM is garbage and EA shouldn’t be promoting that game until it resembles basketball on at least the XBOX, not PS1.  Also, EA’s website totally sucks as a whole, but that’a a story for another day.

My point is this, it seems like 2K plays their promotions game to their opponents level rather than being proactive about it and actually beating them to the punch.  Yes, I’ve seen NBA 2K7 commercials, but not nearly as much as the NBA Live commercials.  However, they could have a stronghold on the college basketball market by creating hype for the game NOW!  Why wait until you see your rivals commercials on TV before you decide to do anything about it?  NHL 2K7 and NBA 2K7 have already been released and are getting positive reviews, why not take the effort now and totally pimp out College Hoops?  Throw us a damn bone once in awhile and get us excited for the games! Is that too much to ask by us fans?

Oh, by the way, I do see that there’s a release date for 11/20/07  on EB’s website for the game, but they aren’t saying a damn word on whether that’s accurate or not on their website forums.
