One thing is for sure, its shaping up to be a great summer for football games. EA really seems to be focusing on many things about the NCAA and Madden series that hardcore gamers have cringed at for the past several years, and from what Bangpow saw at the EA Tiburon Studios earlier this month, I think there's some big-time cause for excitement this year.

However, as excited as I am for those games- I have to say that what I'm really anticipating the most is the release of 2K Sports' All Pro Football 2K8.   That's not to say I don't expect the EA games to be good, and much improved, but I'm expecting All Pro Football 2K8 to be "different".

And I mean "different" in a good way.

First, lets expose my bias right off the bat.  I love classic players. To me, the NFL reached a plateau in the 70s, 80s, & early 90s that I'm still in awe of.  That's not to say that the game is "bad" now.  The NFL is fine today. But the brand of football that was played (and was allowed) by the NFL in its past was something very special, and there's been many special players from the NFL's past who's images and abilities will stick with us forever.

And that's where the "chance" for this 2K football product is.  Those of you who know me have read my criticism of 2K marketing.... or lack thereof.  I stand by that 100%.  Something is very wrong with how things are done over there, and its getting to the point where many people (myself included) are wondering how stable of a company 2K sports really is.  However, if this game is done right, a chance exists for the game to succeed beyond its so-far-non-existent marketing.

It's happened before, and its happened in football video gaming.

16 years ago, a football product was released in the U.S. by a Japanese company that had no commercials, no hype, and virtually no marketing blitz.

New APF2K8 Preview w/ Screens on Gaming-Age.com

Gaming-Age.com has posted their All-Pro Football 2K8 Preview and they've also posted some new screenshots as well.

"Let the Debates on Ranking Football’s Best BEGIN!

The first thing you’ll do to start playing is create your custom team. Step one is drafting your first eleven players from the Legends roster, which is broken into three categories: gold, silver and bronze. Passers, runners and receivers dominate the list, but there are plenty of defensive players to choose from, as well. There are also offensive linemen if you’re a lifetime member of the Tony Munoz fan club.

The rest of your roster spots are filled in by randomly generated players with fictional names. You can choose their general strengths (run blocking vs. pass blocking, for example), but won’t be creating each player. Legends are marked on the field at all times by a star at their feet, so there’s no mistaking a legend for a newbie.

Contrary to popular expectations, you can create custom players from scratch (Viva Ron Mexico!). Created players are placed into the Legends roster and can be selected the same way as other legends, so they take up one of your eleven spots.

Created players also have access to the special abilities of legends. Instead of traditional player ratings in various categories (ranked 1-100), APF 2K8 uses a special abilities system to differentiate players. Legends have qualities that fit the player, such as Dan Marino’s quick release, John Elway’s rocket arm and Walter Payton’s unique, and dangerous, stutter step. We didn’t get enough play time in to see how non-legends players are distinguished from each other, but the system is definitely an interesting idea and we’re anxious to put it through its paces."

Vetzballin APFK 2K8 Hands-on Impressions

"Vetzballin was fortunate enough to be invited today to 2K's NY offices to get a hands-on look at their new All Pro Football 2K8 title. While I wasn't allowed to take any in game screen shots or videos, I did get to spend about an hour watching the game in action and playing it for myself as 2K's PR Manager Anthony Chau walked me thru different aspects of the game.

Before I go any further, Anthony wanted me to explain exactly why there is no Franchise mode, and to clear up any misconceptions that 2K has been planning this game for the last three years. According to him, the idea for this game was born about a year ago and as it began to go into development, there was just no time to add a robust franchise mode. The producers also wondered just how feasible it would be to have a franchise mode with teams made up of legends. 2K has not ruled out future iteration of the series having added franchise mode as they are exploring ways to do it, but for this year the focus was strictly on gameplay and delivering the best football product that they could.
