Another Ian Cummings blog post and he brings some good insight on Madden, yet again.  Here, he talks about Gang Tackling in the Madden game as well as posting a nice vide of some gang tackling action.

WATCH GANG TACKLING VID HERE

"After the last blog post describing some of the shots from the marketing video, I went ahead and took some time out this week to try capture some of the new gang tackling stuff directly from my XBOX 360 here at my desk. I saw a few posts calling me out - things like "where is this video you promised us?!?!?"…sorry guys, I am a busy man. I'm sure you understand…would you rather me fix some of the last second issues and add more last second features and polish, or put together a video? It's a delicate balance…I stayed pretty late last night so while I waited on builds to finish I tried to throw together what I could.

Keep in mind this is pretty rough - there's no slick MTV-style editing with heart thumping music - just pure gameplay and replays. I'm by no means a camera expert either, so hopefully you don't get too seasick watching the videos. I tried to get the best examples I could within the 10 minute time window I had…so there is still some ugliness in here that we're working on (you'll see some foot sliding and dumb end-play assignment stuff), but I hope you'll be happy with what you see. Videos can't show the game changing difference this technology has made for us (and for you all). I tried to get a really good 4 man one, but only got ones where the defender fell backwards at first. This isn't always the case, but it was the best I could do with the time…getting a "true" 4 man pileup proved kind of difficult.

After you watch it - post and give me some feedback. Just as an FYI, a few of the tackles in this video are physics-driven, i.e. not mo-capped (because that really limits you when you're tied so directly to real-life capture). Personally, I can immediately tell when I see one that isn't "real", but that's what makes it really cool to me too. What are your thoughts on it? If you were hired as the lead gameplay designer for EA Sports starting tomorrow, and had to make the call, would you...

A.) Have gang tackles trigger less often, but guarantee that they look "captured" and realistic, including getup animations

B.) Rely solely on physics based animations, which ensures much more playback and animation coverage, but more physics/ragdoll-ish looking animations

C.) Do a mix of both (which is what we do now) Choose your own adventure!

I'm curious to hear your feedback, and enjoy the vid.

Look for videos of sideline catches and double team over the next two Fridays…I have to finish up some tuning stuff before I focus on capturing some of those.
