I’m not quite ready to write a full-on review of NBA Live 08 yet, but I did want to drop some more of my thoughts of the game down on here. I had a chance to explore the game a little more and there’s some cool things that I found in the game. I mean, nothing too huge or anything, but things that help the overall experience. You’ll also have to excuse me if a couple things that I mention have been in previous years of the game, I found the last two years games to be rather disappointing and couldn’t even play them. This year is different, though.
Hot Spots
I do like the addition of the “hot spots” this year and I like the fact that you can view each players hotspots (while not in a game) and that some players have vids of their signature moves. Pulling up the hot spots graphic while in the game is a great way for some of the more casual fans to learn what a players strengths and weakness are on the court. It can be a little cumbersome to pull up the graphic with the LB button, but once you get used to it it’s not that bad to pull up
Slam Dunk Competition
OK, I haven’t gone too deep into this mode, but I was screwing around with it for a little bit and it’s a bit challenging. I like that. It’s really neat how there’s a couple different stages to pulling off the dunk. That way you actually have to use some sort of skill in order to pull off a nice dunk that will get the crowd into it. I’m terrible right now, but it is a mode that I think will be fun to explore a little more.
Dynasty Features
I’ve only really played a couple games in Dynasty mode so far. That being said, something struck me right out of the gate as very interesting when I was setting up the league. What I saw was the ability to actually start the 2007 season with the 2007 NBA Draft! So, if you don’t like what you’re team just did in the draft a few months ago, you can participate in the draft yourself and take your team into the 2007-2008 season. One thing I don’t know is if we are going to be able to import the March Madness draft classes or not. Either way, I like the fact the we don’t have to sim a full season in order to get to the draft.
Overall, even though I don’t think the game is quite as deep and as feature laden as it’s competitor, NBA 2K8, I do find a lot of redeeming features in the game and is a nice change of pace. It’s got me looking forward to what March Madness will hold for us, that’s for sure.
