CS News - College Hoops 2K8

As I have been playing College Hoops lately, I knew that 2K8 was different from the past couple renditions and I couldn't quite figure out what it was. I know the animation system is different and I wasn't quite sure if I liked it or not. Also, I think the graphics are good, but I seemed to remember that College Hoops 2K6 graphics were even better.

So, I went to class today and classes were cancelled due to weather and while I was stuck in the parking lot trying to get out with my gas gauge on E, I started thinking what I was going to do with my night. After I got out of the damn parking lot and got some gas, I decided to stop by my local EB Games and pick up used copies of College Hoops 2K6 and College Hoops 2K7 and compare them to College Hoops 2K8.

Here's the conclusion that I've come to so far..

Animations

2K6 and 2K7 have the same animation systems and are very similar. I did remember after playing that hitting "X" to steal the ball didn't come around until 2K7, you had to use the R-stick in 2K6. What really popped out to me was how limited the animations seemed in 2K6 and 2K7 compared to 2K8. There only seems to be a couple shot and rebound animations in the older games, but 2K8 has varied animations for guys coming off of screens while getting bumped and just what looks to be better movement. They also have more animations for different passes in 2K8. I just generally saw more variety in 2K8. I will say that the shooting in 2K8 is a little more sluggish and you can get stuck in a lot of the animations in 2K8 if you jab your stick around too much. I think the overall controls in 2K6 and 2K7 are little more responsive, but overall you can tell the difference in just how the game is a little more dynamic in 2K8.

Graphics

This one is a little tough. I used to really like the 2K6 graphics and didn't think 2K8 looked as goo. I don't really think there was a huge upgrade in the graphics from 2K6 to 2K8. I think the difference is in how the crowd looks, they look better in 2K8. In some ways the 2K8 graphics are better, but in other's the 2K6 graphics are better. For instance, you can see the sweat on the players jersey's in 2K6, but i'm not seeing it in either 2K7 or 2K8. I could be wrong, though, but if it's there, it's not that noticeable. The courts look good in all the games, but I am able to see some small mesh holes in the jersey's in 2K7 that I can't see in 2K8. I think maybe the jersey's in some ways have more detail in 2K8, which kind of takes away from the crispness of the graphics. Also, maybe the shading is different. One noticeable difference between 2K6 is that the camera is a lot farther away than 2K7's and 2K8's camer. All that aside, I just haven't seen a huge upgrade from 2K6 to 2K8.

Overall

I guess up until I did this, I wasn't giving 2K8 it's due. I just saw with my own eyes just how varied the animations are in 2K8 and how guys actually hit their shots in 2K8! I was getting frustrated with 2K6 and 2K7 watching my guys miss wide open shots. In 2K8 they actually hit open shots, which is nice. I would say the graphics are better in 2K8, but not by much, but I think when you factor in the total package, I think 2K8 is better as a whole. I would also say that 2K6 and 2K7 are very close as far as the games though with just some minor differences, but when you step up to 2K8, you can really tell that game is different. I guess by that, 2K8 is the best of the bunch after all.
