"March 5, 2008 - We may not be doctors, but, thanks to the power of the internet, we can pretend from time to time. In this continuing series of articles we'll focus on a particular topic in gaming that could stand to hear a little doctor's advice. Sometimes the subjects will obviously be on life support, while other times our focus will be on more pre-emptive medicine. Prevention is the best cure, after all.

 



Playing Madden football games over the years has become something akin to a long-term relationship. Since its original release in 1989 football fans have had plenty of time to learn all there is to know about Madden's particular rendering of gridiron ballet. In recent years, EA Tiburon has valiantly tried to keep the series fresh and surprising, while simultaneously managing the increased complexity of programming the game for HD consoles. It has been an overwhelming task and, after several consecutive years of feature creep, minor refinements, and some daft button-swapping, it's hard to think that Madden is actually getting better with each year's iteration.

To continue the relationship metaphor, we've entered the stage where it feels like there's nothing left to learn about our erstwhile partner. Madden, we've officially started taking you for granted and, honestly, we're growing apart. We've changed but you still feel like you're mired in the stale glory of your past. After a couple of years of mediocre reviews on 360 and PS3, Madden sales have finally begun to slump from the juggernaut figures that anchored EA's growth in the 90's. While most companies would still kill for the numbers that Madden puts up, this year's decline belays the creative rot that has been festering underneath the surface for a long while now..."
