Well Ladies and Gents, the day is here.......almost. I can now reveal more of the details from the NBA Live 09 community event, but not quite all.
EA wanted us to withhold the following information until after the E3 show and now that day has arrived, I can give you the lowdown on all of the new features within Live 09, including EA's amazing new partnership and the impact this innovative and revolutionary feature will have on the way sports video games are made and played for the forseeable future.......
Introducing a ground breaking feature.....
NBA Live 365
Live 365 spawns from a new partnership EA have made with Synergy Sports Technologys.
What Synergy do is to track every single offensive statistic from EVERY NBA game played throughout the entire season. So for example, when Kobe has the ball, they track percentage wise what he does over the course of the game, whether he fades and shoots, puts up a 3, drives to the hoop, dunks, assists, all of it. They also track where he does it from, how many times and the success rate too.
Live 365 will then use all this information to automatically change rosters/lineups/injuries/player ratings/hot and cold streaks/team personalities on a DAILY basis........think about that for a second !!!!
The deeper we delved into this innovation, to me, the better it looked. The potential for something like this knows no bounds.....
DNA Scouting report – This is just one of the pages you can access from the 365 menu and here you will be able to access the ratings for every player in the league. It will show you in percentage form the tendancies for how many plays of a certain type that player makes at that time. For example for the “big ticket” KG it may say posts up 50%, pick and roll 21% etc etc.... and remember these tendancies will be based upon the last game he played in real life !!!! You will also see on this page, the tendancies the player had at the time the game was shipped in comparison to the latest 365 update.
DNA Tendancies – Another 365 menu option, this page will show you the most up to date stats on where players are shooting from on the court, which direction players are driving to the hoop in and the success rate of each. A ball in the middle will show the shot success rate, while either side of that, arrows will indicate the success rate of driving left or right. Red arrow being strong chance, blue being less chance. Each one will have the percentages of success underneath them.
The shot overlay returns in game this year by pressing the bumper, but is far, far less obtrusive this time round. Not only does it show the hot and cold shooting zones for the ball carrier, it will also show the percentages and drive direction of most success from the DNA Tendancies. This overlay can be bought up whether you are on offense or defense.
All of this may sound like a lot to take in, especially in game, but I have to say having played it, that is not the case at all. It really adds to the authenticity of the game in that your team will be playing like they are in real life !!!
Live 365 will be setup to update all of the DNA stats within 24 hours of the real life games.
Shot streaks – When a player is raining down on the basket in real life, it will reflect in game thanks to this feature of 365 that will monitor those numbers. It calculates based upon the success of points scored compared to that players' normal average. So with Lebron, you would have to really go to town to get him on a shot streak as his average is so high compared to say J Kapono who can obviously drain 3's for fun but not nessacarily on a nightly basis.
Impact streak – A player with an impact streak will be determined by a correlation of statistics from assists and rebounds. This will then alter the player ratings to showcase that players extra effort in game. To clarify with an example, if Rondo pops up with 25 assists one night, he will then have a greater pass success rate in Live 09. You will also have the ability to look at the DNA Top ten hot streaks.
My final thoughts after the community event are extremely positive and I can say with upmost certainty that I will be picking this game up for definite on its release. That is a big one for me as I havn't played the Live series extensively since 05. Live 09 has my attention, the Live 365 and other features that I can't mention yet have me sold right now and I cannot wait to see it up and running.
I am interested to see what NBA 2K9 can come up with to keep themselves on a higher level, but I know that it has got to be big to beat what I have seen of NBA Live 09 thus far. The ball as they say, is in their court!!
