The original Tecmo Bowl is now a $5 download for the Wii Virtual Console as of today.  This was the first console football game to wake the "football" industry out of its Atari Real Sports & 10 Yard Fight slumber.  Tecmo Bowl was the first console football game to make use of the NFLPA license with any real acclaim.

Unfortunately, Tecmo Bowl- though a solid football game for its time- is remembered more for its incredible sequel, Tecmo Super Bowl, that featured an astounding number of  "firsts" for console football... such as deep season stat tracking, injuries, hot/cold streaks, substitutions, and EVERY current team at that time.

That's not to take anything away from the greatness of the original Tecmo Bowl, which Bangpow and myself played the hell out of in the late 80s.  The gameplay was top notch, and the mechanics were easy to pick up.

Sadly, because of Tecmo's NFLPA licensing expiring MANY years ago, only player numbers are featured in this version, when originally it did have player names so many years ago.  That's okay though... I'm sure Bangpow still remembers a certain #34 in silver and black giving him nightmares when I used Oakland.

..Memories...
