The day is finally here
.well one of them anyway. Today is the day that I can actually talk about what I saw and played at the EA Sports NHL 09 Community Event back in April. Those of us that attended werent allowed to talk about anything we say until now and I figured that people didnt want to hear about random stuff about going to dinner and things like that. Today is different and lets get down to business
..
Lets get some key things out of the way first. Those of us that attended the event were the first ones outside of the EA Canada studio to actually see and play the game. It was rather exciting; as I have never seen a game so early in its development cycle and actually get to play it. It was so early that there were still some NHL 08 menus up and sample text for other menu options. It was rather neat just to see the game in that state, but make no mistake, the game was highly playable and ran very smooth. The good thing is that the game feels exactly like NHL 08 with some key improvements in many areas. So the gamers will be able to pick the stick right up and feel very comfortable with the game. Another thing that I wanted to mention, or have mentioned already over the last couple weeks, is that the dev team hears our complaints about the game. While we were at EA Canada we sat through a couple PowerPoint presentations outline some things that they were about to show us about the game. David Littman went right through a list of some of our biggest complaints and not only listed them, but also showed us stats on just how many forums those complaints were posted on and how many posts were made about them. They also read through a ton of reviews and outlined the positives and both negatives of the game that the community has been posting about. It was very impressive. They are well aware of the fact that the CPU shoots too many one-timers and are trying to tone it down and they are also well aware of the passive defense that plagued NHL 08, but well get to that stuff later. Read More... -------------------- |

Awesome write up Banger, so so so very happy to hear about the added goalie animations, and the little touches like a goalie trying to look around a screen. Also the addition of scrums in front of the net is absolutely pleasing to hear. Has board play recieved any similar changes as well that you noticed in your short time with the alpha build or did Litty & co mention anything about it?
Custom soundtracks is not something I expected given how much EA generally pimps their licensing power with music, another great addition, the new checking system sounds pretty damn awesome as well, as does the lifting of sticks and new stick work while on defense. Kudos to the team for adding a dedicated dump button as well, as there are times in 08 where you'll try and make a dump and end up just shooting it on net. Also if you're allowed to talk about it yet, has presentation aside from the start of game intros and a couple new overlays gotten any more attention this year? Do they plan to intergrate the telestrator color comentary breakdowns on replays or have they added any new replay cameras to this years game? Or is it pretty much the same as 08? Any new comentary from Thorne and Clement that stood out? Last question again if you're allowed to talk about it yet. Has franchise mode seen any improvements, or fixes like the goalie droping confidence level/asking for trades for no reason? Thanks again for the info Craig, awesome write up, I didn't think I could get any more excited about NHL09 but now I am after reading. |

Bangpow, when you were playing 09 did you notice if every player could do the same things? Or was there a more noticeable difference between players?

I read this question on the EA forums:
QUOTE My biggest question is for "be a pro", its something i've been looking forward to but i dont want it to ****, but heres the question the biggest thing for a player is how he handels himself in interviews like what crosby would say compared to waht roenick would say, is that in the game do you get postgame interviews and postdraft interviews, or if your going through a bad spot do you get like questoned on it? The response from the moderator: QUOTE That's something I'd like you to find out on your own! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) Sweet! -------------------- INGE-enius

Also the addition of scrums in front of the net is absolutely pleasing to hear. Has board play recieved any similar changes as well that you noticed in your short time with the alpha build or did Litty & co mention anything about it? Honestly, the board play is pretty much the same. I was looking out for it as well as I want to see more scrums along the boards, but it was the same as last year. QUOTE Custom soundtracks is not something I expected given how much EA generally pimps their licensing power with music, another great addition, the new checking system sounds pretty damn awesome as well, as does the lifting of sticks and new stick work while on defense. Kudos to the team for adding a dedicated dump button as well, as there are times in 08 where you'll try and make a dump and end up just shooting it on net. Let me tell you something about the NHL team that I didn't put in the article. They basically said that they are well aware of some of the cool things that 2K does with their games and that people like some of those things. They aren't trying to copy them, but they know that people might expect some of those things in their game. Thus, why we see stuff like the custom soundtracks and what not. QUOTE Also if you're allowed to talk about it yet, has presentation aside from the start of game intros and a couple new overlays gotten any more attention this year? Do they plan to intergrate the telestrator color comentary breakdowns on replays or have they added any new replay cameras to this years game? Or is it pretty much the same as 08? Any new comentary from Thorne and Clement that stood out? Game intros are sweet. Obviously you can set the intro music and like I said with Be A Pro, you start out in the tunnel with the music all muffled and as you get closer to the ice it gets louder and louder. However, I think the presentation is pretty much the same. We didn't really get to see any new overlays as the still were using the NHL 08 ones at the time. Thorn and Clement sound pretty much the same, but they added a bunch of unused audio that they couldn't fit in 08 for this one. I didn't notice any new replay camera's, though. QUOTE Last question again if you're allowed to talk about it yet. Has franchise mode seen any improvements, or fixes like the goalie droping confidence level/asking for trades for no reason? We really didn't get into Franchise mode very much. We might've gotten an hour or so to actually play the game and online of it was in co-op mode so everyone can get their hands on it. Like I said in the article, the game very much feels like NHL 08, but with a bunch of added things to it....which is a good thing in my eyes. Oh, and the defense is actually aggressive this year. They won't sit back and let you pass the puck all over the place. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) QUOTE Thanks again for the info Craig, awesome write up, I didn't think I could get any more excited about NHL09 but now I am after reading. Thanks! I'm glad you liked it and don't be afraid to ask more questions. I don't know when the next embargo date is, but there is one other huge feature that we can't talk about yet that people are going to go ape shit over. At least I did when we were told about it. Bangpow, when you were playing 09 did you notice if every player could do the same things? Or was there a more noticeable difference between players? Player differentiation was a key point that they brought up in the presentation. They wanted the great players to separate themselves from the rest of the pack and what not. You won't be able to things like pull off one-handed dekes with a guy like Holmstrom as you could with Crosby. -------------------- |

In case there's anything that I missed in the article, I'm going to post the notes that I typed as well. I'm actually quite surprised at how organized they were. lol.
QUOTE One handed dekes - roll to babackhand side to either 5 or 7 o'clock depending on player.
Looks good, but not all players will be able to do them. Which is good. Attribute based used to protect puck and for offensive puproses based on Forseberg olympic goal Done prety well Body checks - hip checks are out no "honing missle checking" working on play in front of the net ACTUALL BATTLES IN FRONT OF NET while standing still Nice new body check. Still tuning checks. USING ENDORPHIN FOR CHECKING. Not real time, but still useing 300-400 animations. Pre-triggerd, not completely live, but solid anyway. Big hits only when you leave yourself open by stuff like "hot-dogging" and what not and skaing with your head down. aka "vulnerable states" Stick Lifts - "a" button as of right now lift opponent sticks. choice between hitting or lifting stick..really can get 5-minute major for slashing guy in face. no blood, obviously. they might not implement injuries from that, though. 360 degree poke checks - swing stick in all directions. You have 360 degree motion and rotate. poke check is more effective, but you have to be smart. opponent can get around you easier if you miss. Performance Tracker - User stat tracking tendencies and what not User summaries Rated on position score, Team Play, Stats Teaches players hockey and good hockey players will be good in the game. New goalie animations, including desperation animations and they are putting in different styles. They are adding 50-75 new goalie animations. Goalies will look around screen in front of them, but can get caught looking and let in a goal. 60 fps on PS3 Adding graphic overlay for goals scored during season. New intro Custom soundtracks. Set all arena music per team including goal horns and what not. Set intro music as well. Still looking to work online, but might only work locally. Music will muffle while inside of tunnel. Take screenshots at any time and use them as your hockey card. They get the defensive controls issue. outlined in powerpoint presentation. They understand completely. understand online issues at launch with connectivity. They also understand player differentiation They read the forums and have outlined how many forum posts and reviews commented on the positives and negatives of the game. Trying to tone down CPU one-timers. Trying to implement your and CPU AI to play better man-to-man defense so it shouldn't be an issue. they are still working on it, though. the CPU is still trying a little too much according to litty. We really didn't get into Franchise mode very much. We might've gotten an hour or so to actually play the game and online of it was in co-op mode so everyone can get their hands on it. And that's one of the things some of the rather combative forum posters on some other sites (sites that I won't name) need to understand about EA events: Whenever you play an "unfinished" build, you have to play them on a debug system. They are expensive, specially made systems (made by the hardware manufacturer- in this case Microsoft)- and what makes them special is that they automatically log all bugs and crashes in unfinished builds. They are also very hard to obtain (Microsoft "issues" them to various game makers and sometimes the media) Now- the dev teams have them, but there are often very few to go around. They are highly prized machines assigned to various teams, and they are tracked, inventoried, and safeguarded because of their value. They are important tools in game design. So- lets say- at a community day like at the football event, you might have 14 community leader guys there, and 7 debug systems- its always 2 guys to a system. Debugs are the only way to play unfinished builds. Why is that important? Well, the other guy partnered with you on your system wants to play too, and get impressions for his site. So you end up playing tons of head to head. That's why its extremely hard to dive into franchise (unless you just sim one and post the results)... because you have to be respectful of the other guy using the debug system with you, staring at the same LCD TV. So its extremly hard to "dive into franchise" because there's two guys to a system. So what happens is that you might fire one up, check out the interface, see what- if anything- looks different, and maybe you might sim a season real quick. Now, this wasn't too much of an issue like at the football event 2 weeks ago, because we had two whole days with 3 games. But at a limited event like the NHL one, where you only had an hour or two of hands on with the very early build, playing franchise mode in-depth isn't realistic. But what happens quite often is - like with last year's Madden 08 community day- the forums will criticize the community leader guys for not "discovering" some franchise bug. In the case of Madden last year, the guys at the even DID sim one season of franchise, and it worked fine- however the franchise free agent bug didn't really kick in until years 2 or 3- so it wasn't discovered by us (never mind the builds were finished and the game had already gone gold by community day last year) - but still, all the guys in the program took forum heat at some of the bigger forum sites for being asleep at the wheel. We also take hits because people mistakenly think that we can play online at these events. You just can't make everyone happy. But generally speaking, there's two things you can't really dive into at these events. Online can't be tested, and franchise can really only be "simmed" because you are sharing the debug console with another site representative who- like yourself- is more concerned with gameplay impressions that they will eventually be writing about. -------------------- ![]() |

Thanks for the writeup bangpow!
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised to see all of the cool additions & changes for 09...after all, the transition from 07 to 08 was a great one as well. One question for you...do you know if the Media Hub/soundtracks will be available on the PS3 as well? As a PS3 owner, I hope it's not a 360 exclusive feature. |

I don't remember exactly, but I think the feature sets for both systems will be exactly the same. In fact, it might be a little easier in the PS3 for the soundtracks. I think on the 360 you have to create playlists in your 360 and pull up said playlist in the game or something like that. -------------------- |
